SSSRI – Shanghai Ship and Shipping Research Institute
Shanghai Ship and Shipping Research Institute (SSSRI), the biggest comprehensive communications technology R&D base in China, was founded in 1962. It was formerly a unit directly under the Ministry of Communications. In 2003 it was restructured as the science and technology corporation under the State Owed Assets Administration，State Council.
SSSRI's R&D effort covers development of new type ships, transportation technology, marine engine control systems, navigation safety, telecommunications, environment engineering, automation of industry process, intelligent traffic engineering, port facilities and energy-saving technology etc. Meanwhile, the SSSRI carries out certification, evaluation, development, design, manufacture and commercialization for new technique, new equipment and system engineering; besides, the institute engages in services such as technology consultation and project contracting and supervision.
The institute has been awarded certificates class A on environment impact assessment, environment engineering,
survey design and engineering consultation, certificates class B on architecture engineering design, construction supervision and facilities installation and other qualified certificates such as highway system construction etc. The SSSRI passed ISO9000 certification in 1997.
The Institute currently has nearly 1000 staff, among which there are more than 700 technical staff and near half of them are senior rank holders including researchers, master or doctor degree holders, 4 experts with the "excellent middle-aged and young expert" title and 50-odd technologists with the National Specialist Allowance. The institute has been authorized by the State Council Academic Degree Committee to offer Master degree programs in 4 disciplines including communications system, traffic control engineering, naval architecture and marine engine engineering.
Since its establishment, the SSSRI has archived 1075 items of scientific research achievements and has been awarded 289 assorted prizes in invention, new products and science and technology progress at national, ministerial and Shanghai Municipal levels. Over the past decades, the SSSRI has been granted 28 patent rights.
With the opening of our state as the drive and the concept of "cooperative, practical, innovative, contributive" coupled with the progress in economic and ethics, the Institute has been awarded glorious titles such as "Model Unit", "Red Flag Unit" and "Advanced Science and Technology Institute" etc. by State Council, Ministry of Communications and Shanghai Municipal Government.
Job description for: General Manager Assistant（with strong technical background in ship building）
In 2005, Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) and Shanghai Ship and Shipping Research Institute (SSSRI) established a joint venture (JV) in Shanghai, to serve the Chinese shipbuilding industry in a cooperative way.
During the past years the JV made progress in the field of technology and market development. The joint venture aims at bringing the high quality and experience of both organizations together, providing a good service for a competitive price to the Asian market. On the basis of clients’ requirements and capabilities, either the facilities of SSSRI or MARIN will be used in combination with SSSRI/MARIN expertise. The JV, including her mother companies, offers more than 75 years of hydrodynamic research and industry services of MARIN in the world and the excellent services provided by SSSRI to the shipbuilding industries in the Far East.

Within the next five years, SSSRI/MARIN aims at enlarging the existing market of design and research work using the model basins and expanding the new markets on ship design and operation.
SSSRI/MARIN is recruiting a General Manager Assistant. You will initially be based in the SSSRI/MARIN office in Pudong area (till 2019) then the office will move to Changxing Island ((part of Chongming Island, an official district of Shanghai city).
Currently the team consists of a General Manager Dong GuoXiang, a Deputy General Manager Patrick Hooijmans. MARIN also dispatched a Dutch Senior Project Manager Karola van der Meij who is based in Shanghai. Additional personnel from SSSRI assists in executing the work in the model basins. Future staff will recruited on the basis of work load.
Your position will be based upon a 1 year contract to start with followed by an assessment and leading to a permanent contract after a positive evaluation. The position is based upon a 40 hours per week contract. The salary package is conform market standards, and depending on experience and performance. You will be hired by the JV in China and full social benefits will be paid according to the law.
As a General Manager Assistant, you will work on all aspects to facilitate the business activities of the JV. You will be closely cooperating with the GM and DGM and your main ambition should be:
•Assist the GM and DGM is their daily activities with a focus on information exchange between the JV partners.
•Develop the new markets through arranging and facilitating new contacts within relevant organizations together with the current team.
Duties and responsibilities
*Communication between General Manager and Deputy GM, participate and take minutes on all relevant aspects of the JV (incl. personnel and organizational issues).
*Write annual reports on JV issues.
*Maintain relation with existing and potential clients; responding to customer enquiries and complaints.
*Desk research on potential new markets; arrange marketing visits with potential clients.
*Operational side of the shipping business i.e. ‘marketing’, seatrials, vessel monitoring and operational optimization rather than a deep involvement in model testing and hull lines development.
*Documents & planning control such as visiting regulatory offices for document approvals or applications.
*Native Chinese speaker and very good command of English (written and spoken).
*Preferably some years (preferably about 3) of work experience in shipping industry.
*Ability to deal with different cultural backgrounds. Able to comprehend with someone’s other cultural context.
*Bachelor or college degree, preferably with an exact study content (engineering or physics based) and in combination with organizational skills.
*Tactfulness, in both business as well as (semi-)government circles.
*Adequate knowledge of relevant software such as CMS, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
*Concise and well-organized personality, proactive and self-starting capacity.
*Technical background, beta study.
*Most ideal: maritime university. Marine industry working experience.
